“Waiting on vendor” is not a next action.

The same note has appeared in the status report for three weeks: waiting on vendor. Which vendor? Waiting for what? Who called them, and when will anyone check again? Project next action tracking turns that fog into a sentence a real person can complete: Maria will send the revised hood plan by Thursday.

The mess this fixes

Where this breaks in real life

A project can look updated while standing completely still. Phrases such as in progress, pending, or with landlord describe a mood, not a task. They hide the person who must act, the thing that must be delivered, and the date the team will know whether it happened.

The fix

What to change

Write the next move with a verb, a person, and a date. Attach it to the same restaurant record as the drawing, survey, or decision it depends on. At the next review, start with that commitment instead of asking everyone for a fresh summary.

Do it in this order

  1. 01

    Name the move

Replace a vague status with the exact decision, file, answer, or field task needed next.

  2. 02

    Name the owner

Attach responsibility to a person or role that can actually close the dependency.

  3. 03

    Close the loop

When the file or answer arrives, mark the action done and write the next one.

What should be easier afterward

  • One obvious move at the top of the project
  • Ownership visible without searching meeting notes
  • A due date connected to the work, not a separate reminder

Questions people ask before using it

Can a next action have no owner?

The record can show an unassigned action, but that is intentionally visible as a gap to resolve rather than a hidden default.

Is next-action tracking a full task manager?

No. It focuses the project header on the one move most likely to advance the location; detailed execution can remain in the team's existing tools.
